Retainers
Getting braces or clear aligners is an exciting milestone in your path to a beautiful smile. But once the braces come off or the aligners are removed, there’s still a bit more to do. Retainers keep your teeth in their new positions and ensure that all the hard work pays off.
At Brockway Orthodontics, we’re here to support you with personalized braces that boost your confidence and promote healthier teeth and habits!
What Are Retainers?
Retainers are essential tools in maintaining your beautiful smile after orthodontic treatment. There are two main types of retainers: fixed and removable.
A fixed retainer consists of a small wire bonded to the back surface of your front teeth. It’s ideal for patients who need continuous support and want to avoid the hassle of remembering to wear a retainer.
On the other hand, removable retainers come in two forms: a traditional acrylic design with a wire and a clear aligner similar to Spark™ Clear Aligners. Removable retainers are perfect for those who prefer the flexibility to take them out while eating or cleaning their teeth.
Why Are Retainers Necessary?
After your braces or clear aligners are removed, your teeth might still feel a bit loose. During treatment, your teeth shift, and once the braces are off, they aren’t yet fully anchored in their new positions.
Wearing retainers helps prevent your teeth from drifting out of alignment before the bone and gum tissues have settled around the roots. By using retainers, you’re ensuring all your efforts during your orthodontic treatment last a lifetime.
How Much Time Should You Wear Your Retainers?
The time you should wear your retainers can vary based on your individual needs. Many patients start by wearing their removable retainers all day and night for several months to two years. They can be removed during meals but remember to put them back afterward.
After the initial period, most people will need to wear their retainers every night for the rest of their lives to maintain that perfect alignment.
How to Care for Your Retainers
For Fixed Retainers
- Clean with normal brushing and flossing.
- Consider using a waterpik for more effective cleaning.
- Visit your hygienist every three to six months for professional cleaning.
For Fixed Retainers
- Rinse and gently brush retainer with a soft toothbrush using an antibacterial hand soap or dish soap. Don’t use toothpaste as it’s too abrasive.
- Avoid baking soda as it can be too abrasive.
- Soak in a denture cleaner for about five minutes for thorough cleaning.
- Rinse every time you remove them and clean them at least once a day.
