All About Braces
Braces have come a long way in just a few years! If you had braces or retainers as a child, you’ll be amazed at how different the experience is today. Thanks to advancements in orthodontic technology, we now have improved diagnosis, faster treatment results, smaller braces, and even completely clear appliances.
At Brockway Orthodontics, we’re here to support you with personalized braces that boost your confidence and promote healthier teeth and habits!
What Are Braces?
Braces are orthodontic devices designed to straighten teeth and correct bite issues. They consist of several key components: brackets, which are attached to the teeth; wires, which connect the brackets; and bands, which hold everything in place.
There are two main types of braces patients can choose from:
- Metal Braces: The traditional option made of stainless steel. They are strong and effective for all types of orthodontic cases.
- Ceramic or Clear Braces: Since they are crafted from tooth-colored ceramic materials, these braces blend with your natural teeth, making them less noticeable than traditional metal braces.
Dr. Brockway utilizes advanced technology, including a Medit Intraoral scanner, to ensure your braces fit perfectly. The Medit Intraoral scanner creates a 3D digital impression of your teeth, allowing us to see every detail without the need for messy molds. This way, we can design your braces for optimal comfort and effectiveness.
Modern braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever, thanks to innovations in materials. The wires are often made from nickel titanium, which allows for extremely gentle forces to move your teeth into their ideal positions. This means a more pleasant experience as you work toward your dream smile!
How Do Braces Work?
Braces work by applying gentle pressure to your teeth, guiding them into their desired positions over time.
To maintain your beautiful new alignment, you will also need to wear a retainer after your braces are removed. It helps keep your teeth in their final positions and minimizes everyday wear and tear from chewing and clenching.
How Long Does the Treatment Take?
It’s common to experience some discomfort after getting your braces placed and after each adjustment. You might feel a slight ache in your teeth, especially when biting down. Any soreness in your gums should subside within a few days. If you need relief, over-the-counter pain medication can help.
How Can I Take Care of My Smiles and Braces At Home?
To keep your braces in top shape, follow these tips:
- Avoid tough meats, hard breads, nuts, popcorn, corn on the cob, and raw vegetables.
- Skip sticky candies, as they can get stuck in your braces and become tough to clean.
- Don’t chew on objects like ice, pens, or fingernails.
- Brush your teeth within 20 minutes after meals to prevent plaque buildup. An electric toothbrush is highly recommended.
- Use regular floss or a water flosser after brushing your teeth.
- Schedule professional cleanings every three months.
What Should I Do if a Brace or Wire Comes Loose?
When a wire or band comes loose, don’t worry! Just call our office to set up an appointment for a repair.
If a wire is sticking out and bothering you, gently push it back into place using the eraser end of a pencil. This is a temporary fix until you can come in. You can also use wax or wet cotton to protect your mouth from irritation.
